Europol: Properties worth €48m frozen after cocaine sweep in Ecuador and Spain

Europol initiated this cooperation with Ecuador, one of the main transit hubs for cocaine shipments to the EU. The common efforts to combat these large-scale criminal activities resulted in the signature of a Working Arrangement between Europol and Ecuador in October 2023. This new framework enhances the cooperation between law enforcement authorities from EU Member States and their Ecuadorian counterparts in the joint fight against multinational drug cartels.

Finland: Government to tackle labour exploitation with a broad action plan

Different means will be used to better identify and detect exploitation and trafficking in human beings and to prevent the recurrence of such abuses. Work-based residence permits will be better monitored both before and after their issuance so that discrepancies in pay, for example, can be detected more effectively. The line between entrepreneurship and employment relationship will be clarified and the position of victims will be improved.

Norway starts maritime training mission

This spring, Norwegian soldiers start training Ukrainian Marines specialized in small boat operations. The training will go on for at least a year. In addition, Norway will donate rubber boats and equipment to a value of approximately NOK 60 million.
The training is a first step in the maritime coalition work that Norway is co-ordinating with Great Britain.

Norway joins NATO initiative on production capacity

Many nations have taken measures, and so has Norway. We have signed long-term contracts to provide predictability, and we have allocated a total of three billion NOK in direct production support. In addition, we have together with our Nordic friends, financed a production line at NAMMO that delivers ammunition directly  to Ukraine We have done a lot, but we need to do more. Coordinated efforts among allies are especially important.

Ukraine: Updated RDNA3 needs assessment released

After almost two years of Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine, an updated joint Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA3)  released today by the Government of Ukraine, the World Bank Group, the European Commission, and the United Nations currently estimates that as of 31 December 2023 the total cost of reconstruction and recovery in Ukraine is $486 billion (€452.8 billion) over the next decade, up from $411 billion (€383 billion) estimated one year ago.

U.S. OFAC sanctions network smuggling U.S. tech to Central Bank of Iran

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned a procurement network responsible for facilitating the illegal export of goods and technology from over two dozen U.S. companies to end-users in Iran, including the Central Bank of Iran (CBI), which is designated for its role in providing financial support to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) and Hizballah.

Russia: New jurisdiction for extremist material cases

The Federal Law changes the jurisdiction for considering administrative cases pertaining to recognising information materials as extremist. The Law states expressly that a supreme court of a republic, a territorial or regional court, a court of a federal-level city, a court of an autonomous region or a court of an autonomous area, rather than district courts, shall try the above-mentioned categories of cases. The relevant court is obliged to involve copyright holders, publishers, authors of materials and/or their translations as persons of interest in the case.

Finland: Proposal for introducing border procedure sent out for comments

The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a draft proposal for introducing a border procedure. The border procedure involves swift processing of asylum seekers’ applications in the vicinity of the border.
In accordance with the Government Programme, the aim of the proposal is to introduce a border procedure with an approach that will fully exploit the scope of the Asylum Procedures Directive as required by any given situation.

The theme of the first edition of defence hackathons is “Digital in Defence”. Several challenges will be designed under this theme. Teams of students or young engineers will compete to come up with the best solutions for the challenges. Experts from defence ministries, innovation ecosystems and defence industry will guide the teams during the event and sit in the panels that will select the best solutions.

EU Commission: Croatia gets 4th RRF payment of €162.5m

Croatia submitted to the Commission its fourth payment request of €162.5 million under the RRF, covering 9 milestones and 7 targets. These cover reforms in the areas of public administration, the judiciary, public procurement, early childhood education and care, as well as investments in the decarbonisation of the energy sector, electronic communications, research and innovation, and health.

Poland: EU Commission disburses the first RRF payment of €6.3bn

Poland submitted to the Commission the first payment request of €6.3 billion under the RRF covering 37 milestones and one target. These cover five investments and 25 reforms in key areas such as improving the country’s investment climate, the resilience and competitiveness of the economy, agriculture, green energy, digital transformation, health and clean mobility.
