Israel must act now to let aid through and save lives in Gaza- article by the UK Foreign Secretary

Red Sea: Houthi violation of freedom of navigation 

France reiterates its condemnation of the attacks carried out by the Houthis against commercial ships in the Red Sea, which undermine navigational rights and freedoms, and it demands that the Houthis end them immediately. Through these armed actions, the Houthis bear a very heavy responsibility for regional escalation. Through its Resolution 2722, the Security Council stated on 10 January 2024 that the exercise of navigational rights and freedoms must be respected and that States have the right to respond to these attacks, in accordance with international law.

Finland addresses eastern border and European security

On Friday 12 January, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed the security situation at Finland’s eastern border. In addition, the President and the Ministerial Committee discussed Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and the security situation in Europe, as well as the situation in the Red Sea.

The NATO-Ukraine Council met on Wednesday (10 January 2024) following recent waves of heavy Russian airstrikes against Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure. Allies strongly condemned the escalation in Russian air strikes on Ukraine, as well as Russia’s use of ballistic missiles sourced from North Korea and drones from Iran.

Eurojust and Panama step up cooperation against organised crime

Eurojust and the Attorney General of the Republic of Panama, Mr Javier E. Caraballo Salazar, have signed a Working Arrangement today to enable structured and closer cooperation in the fight against organised crime. The agreement formalises Eurojust’s existing Contact Points in Panama and ensures closer communication to speed up the execution of judicial cooperation requests on both sides.

Houthi attacks: Joint Statement on Defence

The Council today established a dedicated framework for restrictive measures in support of democracy and a peaceful and orderly transfer of power in Guatemala. Today’s decision will allow the European Union to hold accountable those obstructing a democratic transition following the 2023 general elections, which resulted in a clear victory of President-elect Bernardo Arévalo, as attested by the EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Guatemala.

Europol: Cryptojacker arrested in Ukraine over €1.8m mining scheme

The 29-year-old individual was apprehended in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, on 9 January. Three properties were searched to gather evidence against the main suspect. The arrest comes after months of intensive collaboration between Ukrainian authorities, Europol and a cloud provider, who worked tirelessly to identify and locate the individual behind the widespread cryptojacking operation. The suspect is believed to have mined over USD 2 million (EUR 1.8 million) in cryptocurrencies.

In der heutigen Sitzung des Ausschusses der Ständigen Vertreter (AStV) hat Deutschland mit der Mehrheit der Mitgliedstaaten der am 19.02.24 von der belgischen Ratspräsidentschaft im Trilog erzielten, vorläufigen Einigung zum Verordnungsentwurf über einen freiwilligen Zertifizierungsrahmen zur CO2-Entnahme und Carbon Farming zugestimmt. Die Einigung muss nun noch durch das Europäische Parlament formell bestätigt werden.
