Nordic-Baltic foreign ministers to visit Moldova

On 15 October 2024, the Nordic-Baltic countries’ foreign ministers will travel to Moldova. The visit comes ahead of the concurrent presidential elections and referendum on Moldova’s future relations with the European Union on 20 October 2024.

U.S. – Background press call by a Senior Administration Official on Taiwan elections

So, on January 13th, Taiwan will hold presidential and legislative elections following a transition period.  The Taiwan president-elect will be inaugurated on May 20th.  This election marks the island’s fourth transition between democratically elected administrations since fully democratic elections were first held in 1996.
The United States has full confidence in Taiwan’s democratic processes, and there is strong bipartisan support for its free and fair elections.

UN underlines need to move forward on peace efforts in Colombia

Recent developments in Colombia have highlighted the need to move forward in implementing the 2016 peace agreement signed by the Government and the FARC-EP militia group, UN Special Representative Carlos Ruiz Massieu told the Security Council on Thursday.  Presenting the latest quarterly report by the UN Verification Mission in Colombia, which covers the period from 27 September to 26 December 2023, he expressed hope that this year will be a decisive one for peace.

Finnish ministry receives EIA programme for Olkiluoto NP extension

On 5 January 2024, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment received from Teollisuuden Voima Oyj an environmental impact assessment (EIA) programme referred to in the Act on the Environmental Impact Assessment Procedure. The programme concerns extending the service life of Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2 nuclear power plant units located in the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant area in Eurajoki as well as increasing their thermal output.

Finland’s eastern border to remain closed

Finnish Government has decided that the border crossing points on the land border between Finland and Russia will remain closed until 11 February 2024. It will not be possible to submit applications for international protection at any border crossing points on the land border between Finland and Russia. The Government decided on the matter in its session on 11 January 2024. On 14 December 2023, the Government decided to temporarily close the border crossing points on Finland’s eastern border for one month and to centralise the submission of applications for international protection. This was to stop instrumentalised migration at Finland’s eastern border.

Meeting recap: U.S. National Security Advisor with Chinese Communist Party representative

Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer met today with People’s Republic of China Minister of the International Liaison Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Liu Jianchao in Washington, D.C.  This meeting was part of ongoing efforts to maintain open lines of communication and responsibly manage competition. The two sides had candid and constructive discussions, building on the Summit between President Biden and President Xi in Woodside, California in November 2023.

UN: Security Council ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee amends fourteen entries to its sanctions list

On 14 December 2023, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al‑Qaida and associated individuals, groups, undertakings and entities enacted the amendments specified with strikethrough and/or underline in the entries below on its ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2610 (2021), and adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

North Korea: Joint Statement on ballistic missile transfers to Russia

We condemn in the strongest possible terms the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) export and Russia’s procurement of DPRK ballistic missiles, as well as Russia’s use of these DPRK missiles against Ukraine on December 30, 2023 and January 2, 2024. The transfer of these weapons increases the suffering of the Ukrainian people, supports Russia’s war of aggression, and undermines the global non-proliferation regime. Russia’s use of DPRK ballistic missiles in Ukraine also provides valuable technical and military insights to the DPRK. We are deeply concerned about the security implications that this cooperation has in Europe, on the Korean Peninsula, across the Indo-Pacific region, and around the world.

The EU Commission invites farmers to participate in online survey on simplification

As announced in its proposals to reduce the burden weighing on farmers’ shoulders, the Commission is launching today an online survey to gather directly the views of EU farmers. The survey is open from 7 March to 8 April, and will ask short questions, available in all EU languages, such as: How much time is spent each year on administrative tasks linked to application of aid and reporting obligations? Do they use mobile devices to provide geo-tagged photos? How do they rate the complexity of different procedures and rules applicable on farms? Did they use outside help to prepare CAP aid application in 2023? The answers provided by farmers will provide valuable feedback to understand their main sources of concern.

UK: Maritime and Coastguard Agency leads counter-pollution exercise

The 3-day activity, running from Tuesday 5 March to Thursday 7 March, will test the response to a mock scenario in which 300 tons of fuel is spilled in waters east of Portland Harbour. The practice will include testing MCA operations at sea as well as working with partner agencies to further test their plans along the shoreline.

AstraZeneca plans £650m investment in UK

Today (6 March) pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca has outlined plans to invest £650 million in the UK – helping boost the UK’s world leading Life Sciences sector and grow the economy. This significant investment will enhance public health protection and pandemic preparedness.   
AstraZeneca intends to invest £450 million at their manufacturing site in Speke, Liverpool for the research, development, and manufacture of vaccines – building on the site’s current role in supplying the world leading childhood vaccination programme. The new facility will be designed and built to be operationally net zero with power supplied from renewable energy sources.
