EU-US comparison: U.S. Treasury sanctions against Russia’s elites

In August 2023, the U.S. Treasury had declared a round of sanctions targeting prominent members of Russia’s financial elite, as well as a Russian business association. UK: Home Secretary declares Hizb ut-Tahrir as terrorists

The Home Secretary, James Cleverly, has today (15 January) laid a draft order before Parliament to proscribe the international Sunni Islamist political organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir under the Terrorism Act 2000. If agreed by Parliament, the order will come into force on 19 January 2024. This means that belonging to, inviting support for and displaying articles in a public place in a way that arouses suspicion of membership or support for the group will be a criminal offence.

Switzerland and China strengthen ties ahead of 75th anniversary

On Monday, 15 January, a Federal Council delegation led by President Viola Amherd received a Chinese delegation led by Premier Li Qiang at the Lohn Estate for an official visit to Switzerland. This was the first such high-level meeting since the pandemic. EU Commission greenlights data flows with 11 countries

Today, the European Commission successfully concluded its review of 11 existing adequacy decisions. These decisions had been adopted under the EU data protection legislation that preceded the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The current energy crisis has raised important policy questions on how to strengthen short-term energy security while remaining firmly committed to the green transition, a challenge amplified by the recent consensus at COP28 to transition away from fossil fuels. This paper examines the historical determinants of the security of energy supply and analyzes the green transition implications for energy security. UN: Guterres warns against Red Sea escalation

Polish Armaments Group agrees defence agreements with UK firms

Energy efficiency of buildings: MEPs adopt plans to decarbonise the sector

On Tuesday, MEPs adopted plans, already agreed upon with Council, to help reduce energy consumption and greenhouse-gas emissions from the buildings sector. EU Commission launches public consultation on protecting sharks and related ecosystems

Today, the Commission has launched a public consultation on ways to better protect and manage sharks and related marine ecosystems, to help prepare follow-up to the European Citizens’ Initiative “Stop Finning – Stop the Trade”. It will be available online for a period of twelve weeks, until 4 June 2024. Today’s public consultation follows the call for evidence launched on 22 February 2024 to collect data and expertise on a potential ban on exports and imports of loose shark fins as well as their sales within the EU market.
