EBA issues ML/TF risk guidance to crypto-asset service providers

The European Banking Authority (EBA) today extended its Guidelines on money laundering (ML) and terrorist financing (TF) risk factors to crypto-asset service providers (CASPs). The new Guidelines highlight ML/TF risk factors and mitigating measures that CASPs need to consider, representing an important step forward in the EU’s fight against financial crime.

Ukraine: Civilian casualties spike following wave of Russian attacks

Recent weeks have seen a steep increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine following an intensification of Russian attacks, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in the country, HRMMU, said in a new report issued on Tuesday. Hundreds of people across the country were killed or wounded in drone and missile strikes in the 10-day period between 29 December and 8 January alone.

Israel: French Government on attack in Ra’anana 

France utterly condemns the terrorist attack in Ra’anana today, which killed at least one person and injured 17 others, including several children. Nothing justifies terrorism. Two young compatriots are among those injured. The French Consulate General in Tel Aviv is working flat out to support our nationals in Ra’anana.

Iraq: French Government on attack in Erbil 

France utterly condemns the attack carried out on Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan Region, which included the use of ballistic missiles, on the evening of 15 January, for which the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have claimed responsibility. Such acts are flagrant, unacceptable, worrying violations of Iraq’s sovereignty and undermine its stability and security, and Kurdistan’s within it. They are helping to escalate regional tensions and must stop.

Central African Republic: France condemns attack on MINUSCA

France condemns in the strongest terms the attack on the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) which took place on January 15 in Mbindale, located in the Lim-Pendé prefecture, and killed one Cameroonian peacekeeper. We offer our condolences to the deceased soldier’s loved ones and to the Cameroonian authorities. We wish those who were injured a speedy recovery.

EU terrorist list: EU Council lists one individual in response to the 7 October attacks in Israel

The Council decided today to add one individual to the EU terrorist list. This decision comes as part of European Union’s response to the threat posed by Hamas and its brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attacks in Israel on 7 October 2023. These sanctions are effective as of today. The individual designated today is Yahia Sinouar, the political leader of Hamas. Following his listing, Yahia Sinouar is subject to the freezing of his funds and other financial assets in EU member states. It is also prohibited for EU operators to make funds and economic resources available to him.

ISIL/Al-Qaida: EU Council adds individual to sanctions list against terrorism

The measures target Ahmed Khaled Müller, a member of Al-Shabab in Somalia. The sanctioned individual has participated in combat operations and committed terrorist acts on behalf of Al-Shabab. The latter operates in the Horn of Africa region, is responsible for numerous terrorist acts in Kenya, Somalia, as well as neighbouring countries, and is affiliated with Al-Qaida. With this new listing and the de-listing of a deceased individual today, a total of 15 persons are subject to a travel ban and an asset freeze, and five groups to an asset freeze. In addition, EU persons and operators are forbidden from making funds or economic resources available to the listed persons and groups.

Andriy Yermak: Davos meeting yields unity on peace principles for Ukraine

He reminded that during the consultations in Malta, the first five points of the Peace Formula were discussed, namely: nuclear safety, food and energy security, release of prisoners and deportees, restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Five more points of the Formula were presented in Davos: the withdrawal of Russian troops and the cessation of hostilities, the restoration of justice, environmental safety, the prevention of escalation and recurrence of war, and the issue of confirming the end of the war.

UK: Home Secretary declares Hizb ut-Tahrir as terrorists

The Home Secretary, James Cleverly, has today (15 January) laid a draft order before Parliament to proscribe the international Sunni Islamist political organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir under the Terrorism Act 2000. If agreed by Parliament, the order will come into force on 19 January 2024. This means that belonging to, inviting support for and displaying articles in a public place in a way that arouses suspicion of membership or support for the group will be a criminal offence.
