Lena Düpont (EPP, DE) was appointed on Tuesday Chair of the EP Frontex Scrutiny Working Group (FSWG), to replace Roberta Metsola.
Following her appointment, Ms Düpont said: “The FSWG did an important task in scrutinizing Frontex by initiating changes within the agency and reminding all actors to live up to their responsibilities. It is high time that the FSWG takes up that work again, follow up on our recommendations, also in the light of the current unprecedented challenges member states face when dealing with the fastest ever evolving humanitarian crises at our borders. Frontex has a key role to play in supporting Member States. Thus, even more emphasis will be on ensuring the proper functioning of the Agency.”
Background
The Frontex Scrutiny Working Group was created following a decision by the Civil Liberties committee coordinators on 29 January 2021 and started its work in February. Its aim is to assess Frontex activities and organisation, including its reinforced role and resources for integrated border management and the correct application of the EU acquis.
The FSWG has fourteen members, two per political group:
- EPP: Lena DÜPONT (DE) and Tomas TOBÉ (SV)
- S&D: Bettina VOLLATH (AT) and Javier MORENO SÁNCHEZ (ES)
- Renew: Malik AZMANI (NL) and Dragos TUDORACHE (RO)
- ID: Hélène LAPORTE (FR) and Peter KOFOD (DK)
- Greens: Erik MARQUARDT (DE) and Tineke STRIK (NL)
- ECR: Patryk JAKI (PL) and Jorge BUXADÉ VILLALBA (ES)
- The Left: Sira REGO (ES) and Cornelia ERNST (DE).
In July 2021, the FSWG finished a 4 month fact-finding investigation about the alleged fundamental rights violations in the work of the border agency. The report and recommendations, drafted by Tineke STRIK (Greens, NL), was discussed in the Civil Liberties Committee.

Lena Düpont (CDU), innenpolitische Sprecherin der CDU/CSU-Gruppe, ist heute zur neuen Vorsitzenden des Frontex-Kontrollgremiums ernannt worden. Sie folgt auf Roberta Metsola, die ihm Januar zur Parlamentspräsidentin gewählt worden ist. Hierzu erklärt Lena Düpont:
„Angesichts der humanitären Katastrophe, die der russische Angriffskrieg in der Ukraine ausgelöst hat, ist es mehr denn je unsere Pflicht, die Mitgliedsstaaten bei ihren Aufnahmebemühungen bestmöglich zu unterstützen. Frontex kommt bei der Unterstützung der Registrierung und Aufnahme eine Schlüsselrolle zu. Wir müssen das Funktionieren der Agentur in diesen beispiellosen Zeiten sicherstellen.
Das Kontroll-Gremium hat in den vergangenen Monaten bereits wichtige Aufgaben erfüllt, indem es Frontex unter die Lupe genommen, Veränderungen innerhalb der Agentur angestoßen und alle Akteure daran erinnert hat, ihrer Verantwortung gerecht zu werden.“
Hintergrund:
Das Frontex-Kontrollgremium wurde auf Beschluss der Koordinatoren des Ausschusses für bürgerliche Freiheiten eingesetzt und nahm im Februar 2021 seine Arbeit auf. Ziel ist es, die Tätigkeiten und die Organisation von Frontex zu bewerten. Im Juli 2021 beendete das Gremium eine viermonatige Untersuchung über die angeblichen Grundrechtsverletzungen von Frontex. Das Gremium umfasst 14 Mitglieder und setzt sich aus zwei MdEP pro Fraktion zusammen.
