Brussels, 29 November 2023

The European Commission approved today the addition of Ayaş Domatesi‘, a Turkish tomato, to the register of Protected Designations of Origin (PDO).

‘Ayaş Domatesi’ is a thin-skinned and very juicy tomato grown from seeds and seedlings of the local ecotype in the Ayaş district of Ankara province. It is large and fleshy, its skin has a dull pink-red colour and there are slight ridges on the outer surface of the tomato. When the fruit is split in two, a white patch can be seen on the flesh. Due to its high acidity, it has a slightly salty and lemony aroma.

The ‘Ayaş Domatesi’ variety has been cultivated in Ayaş since the 1960s. The district of Ayaş, which is located in the Central Anatolia Region, differs from the climatic characteristics of the rest of the region and shows microclimatic characteristics. This climate affects the product characteristics.

This new denomination will be added to the list of 1,672 food products already protected. The list of all protected geographical indications can be found in the eAmbrosia database. More information is available online at Quality Schemes and on our GIView portal.
