It is very good news that today the European Union opens accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.
We stand at the threshold of a significant and transformative moment for these two countries and for our Union.And we celebrate the values and principles that bind us together. The EU has always been more than a political and economic union. It is a testament to our collective aspiration for peace, for security, for democracy and for prosperity.
The people of Ukraine and Moldova have demonstrated their unwavering commitment and determination to be a part of this project. Even in a time of war and turmoil they have started extensive reforms.
They know, that their journey will be rigorous and demanding. The accession negotiations are designed to prepare the candidates for the responsibilities of membership. This is why there are no shortcuts. We embark on these negotiations in a strong spirit of openness, engagement, and commitment.
The path ahead will be challenging. But it is also filled with immense opportunities for Moldova and Ukraine – as well as for our entire Union.
Together, we can forge a larger, more dynamic and forward-looking Europe. So I wish you a very successful start of the accession negotiations.

The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament welcomes today’s launch of the EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, a historic step in the journey of these two states to join our Union.
The accession talks kicked off with two intergovernmental conferences, as both countries made considerable efforts and managed to achieve progress in implementing the necessary reforms despite Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine and its impact in the region.
Our political group has been constantly supporting both countries in their efforts to make progress towards EU membership. We have been working closely with our sister parties and like-minded partners, and will continue to do so, reaffirming our full commitment to the cause and making sure that the accession process is credible, fair and fast.
Renew Europe MEP, Petras Auštrevičius (Lithuanian Liberal Movement), said:
“The start of accession negotiations and the subsequent reform process will strengthen Ukraine’s statehood and increase its resilience to external threats. This important decision to open negotiations is therefore to be welcomed, and the EU itself should prepare the necessary instruments for long-term cooperation in this field. Similarly, the opening of negotiations with Moldova represents the EU’s continued and growing support for this important country and the European choice of its people. This will guarantee Moldova’s European course and strengthen the country’s security, stability and economic growth.”

Der Rat der Europäischen Union hat sich auf den Beginn von Beitrittsgesprächen mit der Ukraine und mit der Republik Moldau geeinigt. Die erste intergouvernementale Konferenz findet am Dienstag, den 25. Juni statt. Dazu erklären:
Michael Gahler (CDU), außenpolitischer Sprecher der EVP-Fraktion:
„In Kiew schlägt das Herz Europas. Die Überzeugung, mit der die Menschen in der Ukraine für Europa einstehen, ist unübersehbar. Sie setzen große Hoffnungen auf die Europäische Union. Sie ist der verheißungsvolle Fluchtort aus dem düsteren Kriegsalltag. Deshalb haben wir als EU deutlich gemacht: Wir wollen die Ukraine als Mitglied unserer Europäischen Union. In Rekordzeit, und nur vier Monate nach Antrag, im Juni 2022, haben die Staats- und Regierungschefs der EU der Ukraine zusammen mit der Republik Moldau den Kandidatenstatus gewährt. Das war ein historischer Moment und eine klare politische Botschaft. Beide Länder haben sich unwiderruflich für einen europäischen Weg entschieden und arbeiten bereits intensiv an der Umsetzung all dessen, was Voraussetzung für eine Mitgliedschaft in unserer Union ist.“
David McAllister (CDU), Vorsitzender des Auswärtigen Ausschusses im Europäischen Parlament:
„Die Republik Moldau wird wegen ihrer Solidarität mit der Ukraine und der proeuropäischen Orientierung, angeführt von Präsidentin Maia Sandu, vom Kreml offen ins Visier genommen. Das zeigt sich besonders vor den anstehenden Präsidentschaftswahlen im Oktober. Eine moskauhörige Regierung in Moldau würde Russland neue strategische Möglichkeiten eröffnen und den Druck auf den Süden der Ukraine erheblich erhöhen. Trotz eines permanenten Krisenmodus schafft es die Regierung in Chișinău weiterhin, ein ehrgeiziges pro-europäisches Reformprogramm voranzutreiben.
Zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt kann es keine verbindliche Zusage gekoppelt mit einem Beitrittsdatum geben. Denn die eigentliche Arbeit beginnt erst jetzt. Ukrainische und moldauische Gesetze müssen an das EU-Recht angepasst, die Verwaltung nach EU-Vorgaben aufgestellt und die Menschen im Land mit den EU-Regeln vertraut gemacht werden. In den anstehenden Beitrittsverhandlungen geht es darum exakt festzulegen, welche Reformen der Beitrittskandidat unternehmen muss, um im Konzert der EU-Mitgliedstaaten mitspielen zu können. Das dient nicht nur dem Schutz des Beitrittslandes, das ohne eine solche Anpassung mit dem EU acquis schlichtweg überfordert wäre, sondern auch dem Schutz der EU selbst. Bevor wir wieder wachsen, braucht unsere Gemeinschaft eine starke Struktur – vom Keller bis zum Dach. Das bedeutet interne Reformen unserer Entscheidungsprozesse. Es muss in den nächsten Jahren, parallel zu den Beitrittsverhandlungen, darum gehen, nicht nur die Fassade zu verschönern, sondern die Bausubstanz unserer EU zu verbessern, damit wir anschließend nicht nur größer, sondern auch stärker werden.“
