DMA breach: EU Commission sends preliminary “Pay or Consent” findings to Meta

The EU Commission has informed Meta of its preliminary findings that its “pay or consent” advertising model fails to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). In the Commission’s view, this binary choice forces users to consent to the combination of their personal data and fails to provide them a less personalised but equivalent version of Meta’s social networks.

The Council today renewed its restrictive measures in view of the situation in Zimbabwe for a further year, until 20 February 2025.
The EU measures in place consist of an embargo on arms and equipment which might be used for internal repression, and a targeted assets freeze against one entity, Zimbabwe Defence Industries.

Zelenskyy: EU decision on €50bn for Ukraine guarantees social stability

Myanmar military-linked enterprises and infantry divisions sanctioned 3 years on from the military coup

Since the coup the UK has sanctioned 25 individuals and 33 entities under the Myanmar Sanctions Regime, targeting the military’s access to finance, arms and equipment. The UK has also targeted the military’s 2 key conglomerates and their 111 subsidiaries, as well as 3 individuals under the Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime, most recently in December 2023. 
In addition to fresh sanctions, the United Kingdom has, alongside 8 countries and the EU, released a joint statement, reiterating our condemnation of the military regime’s continued violence against and repression of its own people.

Ukraine / Russia: France takes note of the ruling by the International Court of Justice

France has taken note of the ruling issued by the International Court of Justice on January 31 in Ukraine’s case against the Russian Federation concerning to the application of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism.
Once again, the Court found that Russia had violated its international obligations.

Europol supports EMPACT action week at 61 airports across 36 countries worldwide

Europol supported a Spanish-led action week targeting drug trafficking via airports, which focused on checks of passenger and cargo traffic on both direct and connecting flights, mainly from the Americas. The action week, which took place at 61 airports between 11 and 18 December 2023, also involved Frontex, INTERPOL through project AIRCOP and law enforcement authorities from 36 countries. During the action week, the involved authorities carried out checks on passengers and their luggage, as well as on parcels and cargo shipments, at 61 major airports. The checks aimed at detecting the possession or trafficking of drugs, especially cocaine, originating from Latin America. Another objective was to enhance the cooperation between police and customs authorities on both sides of the Atlantic.

France: EU Commission approves €900m state aid for energy and fuel production from biomass and hydrogen

The European Commission has approved a €900 million French scheme to support companies investing in the use of biomass and renewable hydrogen in energy and fuel production, to foster the transition towards a net-zero economy in line with the Green Deal Industrial Plan. The scheme was approved under the State aid Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework, adopted by the Commission on 9 March 2023 and amended on 20 November 2023, to support measures in sectors which are key to accelerate the green transition and reduce fuel dependencies.

9th Cohesion Report: EU Regions and states closing gaps

Cohesion Policy is an important driver of sustainable development and economic growth. In the long run, it is expected that each euro invested through Cohesion Policy will have tripled, by 2043 which is equivalent to an annual rate of return of around 4%. Thanks to the Policy, it is estimated that 1.3 million additional jobs will be created in the EU by 2027, with a large share in sectors related to the green and digital transitions.
