Simon Mordue selected as Deputy Secretary General of the EEAS

European Council President Charles Michel’s Chief Diplomatic Adviser, Simon Mordue has been selected as Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service (EEAS) and will take up his duties on 1 July. Prior to that he will complete a short term assignment on Ukraine for the Commission.

EU and IFC to unlock over €500m in private sector investments for reconstruction in Ukraine

Through the agreement the European Union will provide up to €90 million in financial guarantees to support investments in Ukraine to IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, as part of IFC’s Better Futures Program (BFP). Mobilised investments under the program by the private sector are expected to reach more than €500 million across sectors including essential infrastructure and goods production, promoting decarbonisation and the preservation of livelihoods.

EU Commission calls for eradication of Female Genital Mutilation worldwide

In the context of external action and development cooperation, ending FGM continues to be a key action under the EU Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy 2020-2024 and the EU Gender Action Plan 2021-2025. This is reflected in political dialogues as well as concrete actions.  The EU and its Member States has been a leading donor of the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation, supporting it with a total contribution of €18.5 million since 2016. The EU contributed €60 million to support the Team Europe Initiative on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Africa, and €23,5 million to the Spotlight Africa Regional Programme, that combats gender-based violence, including FGM in 18 partner countries.

Statement from President Joe Biden on U.S. Military Operation in the Middle East

This past Sunday, three American soldiers were killed in Jordan by a drone launched by militant groups backed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).  Earlier today, I attended the dignified return of these brave Americans at Dover Airforce Base, and I have spoken with each of their families. This afternoon, at my direction, U.S. military forces struck targets at facilities in Iraq and Syria that the IRGC and affiliated militia use to attack U.S. forces.

The first UK-EU counter-terrorism dialogue in Brussels

On 2 February 2024, the inaugural UK-EU Counter-Terrorism (CT) Dialogue, as established by the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA), took place in Brussels. This Dialogue was a welcome opportunity for the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) to discuss a wide range of counter-terrorism issues, including assessments on the terrorist threat, and strategic approaches for prevention and response in order to protect our citizens.

Finland: Foreign Service reform to move on to implementation

The reform is based on the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government, and it was launched in autumn 2023. Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen appointed an internal working group at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs to prepare recommendations. The working group submitted its final report to Minister Valtonen on 1 December 2023. On 26 January 2024, the Foreign Ministry’s management group decided to proceed with the implementation of the Foreign Service reform.

Norway extends agreement on medical evacuation from Ukraine

Since August 2022, Norway has been providing regular weekly flights to evacuate Ukrainian patients to countries across Europe. A total of 1538 patients have been evacuated, in 100 operations, by the Norwegian Armed Forces Joint Medical Services in close cooperation with the Norwegian health authorities, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and other key actors. The European Commission has described the transport as a cornerstone of the medical evacuation effort. In response to a request from the EU, the Norwegian Government has decided to extend the medical evacuation operation until November 2024.

SDCA: Norway and USA agree on additional agreed facilities and areas

Today, Norwegian Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram and U.S. ambassador to Norway, Marc Nathanson, signed an amendment agreement under the Supplementary Defense Cooperation Agreement (SDCA). The agreement declares intent to establish eight additional agreed facilities and areas in Norway. Pending the consent of the Norwegian Parliament, these sites can be used by Norway, the United States and other allied forces for a number of military purposes. The signing contributes to a further development of the SDCA, which the Norwegian parliament agreed to in June 2022.

China: IMF Executive Board Concludes 2023 Article IV Consultation

China’s economic activity rebounded in 2023 following the post‑COVID reopening with real GDP estimated to have grown broadly in line with the authorities’ growth target of around 5 percent. The recovery was driven by domestic demand, particularly private consumption, and assisted by supportive macroeconomic policies, including further relaxation of monetary policy, tax relief for firms and households, and fiscal spending on disaster relief. [2] Looking ahead, growth is projected to slow to 4.6 percent in 2024 amid the ongoing weakness in the property sector and subdued external demand.

Serbia-Bulgaria railway project on Corridor Xc launched

Construction work has begun on the Niš-Dimitrovgrad railway section near the Serbian city of Pirot. The project involves the reconstruction and modernisation of an existing unelectrified single-track railway line from Sićevo to Dimitrovgrad and the construction of the northern rail bypass around the city of Niš, as well as electrification and signalling work on both stretches. As part of the EU Economic and Investment Plan, the overall modernisation of up to 104 km of railway lines will result in shorter journey times and improved safety and regional connectivity, while enabling a gradual shift to more environmentally friendly transportation options.

EU-China conclude the 6th HLPPD on education, culture, youth and sport

The theme of this 6th edition of the HLPPD was “working together for a greener and more sustainable future”, and the key role of education in underpinning the transition towards a greener society was one of the main topics of discussion. The need for a more balanced student mobility, which experienced a major set-back during the COVID-19 period was highlighted.
