British Embassy collaborates with campaign for free journalism in Guatemala

Since November 2023, the collective of journalists #NoNosCallarán (they will not shut us up) launched the audio-visual series “For your right to know” where journalists narrate the attacks to which they have been exposed for practicing their profession and actively defending citizens’ right to information. Racist attacks, defamation on social networks, police attacks, imprisonment and criminalization for the spurious use of the justice system are among the tactics that the videos denounce.

Norway provide more NASAMs to Ukraine

The Government proposes to the Norwegian Parliament to order a further ten launch units and four fire control centers of the air defense system NASAMS from Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace (KDA). This is done in addition to repurchasing the equipment that has already been donated to Ukraine. The investment is NOK 3.45 billion.

EU Commission paves the way for financial support on Holocaust remembrance

This week, the European Commission is supporting with €3 million the remembrance of the Holocaust through the creation of a ‘European Network of Places where the Holocaust happened’. The network will make a major long-term contribution to ensure the memory of the victims of the Holocaust is remembered, in line with historic factual truths. It will support the protection and preservation of Holocaust sites and raise awareness among national and local authorities, as well as the public and local communities about the Holocaust as a historical atrocity.

Finland updates risk assessment of money laundering and terrorist financing

Unofficial international money remittances involve a very high risk of money laundering and terrorist financing. In addition, public authorities responsible for anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism and other key actors consider the risk to be high for virtual currency providers, banks and payment service providers. The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of the Interior have partially updated the Nation Risk Assessment of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing that they published in 2021.

Europeans show strong support for EU civil protection in Eurobarometer survey

Today, the European Commission published the results of the Special Eurobarometer measuring public opinion about European civil protection actions in the Member States. Results show a strong consensus among the citizens of the European Union that civil protection activities should be coordinated across the EU. An overwhelming majority of respondents (94%) in the 27 EU Member States thinks that when a disaster strikes in an EU country that is too big to deal with on their own, other EU countries should provide help. Nearly the same number (91%) are supportive of the EU helping any country in the world affected by a disaster.

The recommendation was adopted with 58 votes to 8, with 2 abstentions. Parliament as a whole will hold a vote under the consent procedure during its 22-25 April session in Strasbourg. If Parliament consents, Council will be able to adopt the decision by qualified majority.
