Statement by EU Commission and the EU HR on International Women’s Day

The past four years were marked by several important legislative milestones advancing gender equality. Just one year after the adoption of the Gender Equality Strategy, in March 2021, the Commission put forward a proposal for a Directive strengthening the equal pay principle through pay transparency and enforcement mechanisms. A political agreement on the Pay Transparency Directive, was reached in December 2022, in record time, paving the way for the adoption of the Directive in May 2023.

The EU Commission launches new migration partnership with Mauritania

Today, the European Union is strengthening the cooperation between EU and Mauritania by launching a migration partnership and dialogue. Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson together with the Mauritanian Minister of Interior and Decentralisation, Mohamed Ahmed Ould Mohamed Lemine, have signed a Joint Declaration launching an EU-Mauritania migration partnership. The Commissioner will travel to Nouakchott, in a Team Europe approach, together with the Spanish Minister of Interior of Spain, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and from the Belgian Presidency of the Council, State Secretary for Asylum and Migration of Belgium, Nicole de Moor. On this occasion, the Commissioner will meet Mauritanian President, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani.

Israel/Palestine: EEAS Spokesperson on further settlement expansion

The European Union condemns Wednesday’s approval by the Israeli High Planning Committee of plans for advancing over 3.426 housing units, further expanding illegal settlements across the occupied West Bank. The EU urges Israel to reverse these decisions. The EU reiterates that settlements are illegal under international law and constitute an obstacle to peace, as they threaten the two-state solution. Furthermore, the expansion of settlements is completely inconsistent with ongoing efforts to reduce tensions, which is even more important ahead of the upcoming religious festivities of Ramadan, Pessah and Easter.

Allow more aid into Gaza now, pleads UN health agency chief

Much more lifesaving humanitarian aid must be allowed into Gaza where one in six children is dangerously malnourished in the north of the war-torn enclave, UN health agency chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday. These are “children who survived bombardment, but may not survive a famine”, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros said on X, formerly Twitter.

Reform and Growth Facility for the Western Balkans: EU Council agrees its negotiating mandate

Member states’ EU ambassadors today agreed on the Council’s negotiating mandate on the Reform and Growth Facility for the Western Balkans.
The proposed facility is the centrepiece of the new Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, presented by the Commission in November 2023. It will support the EU’s Western Balkan partners in undertaking a comprehensive set of socio-economic and fundamentals reforms, including on the rule of law and fundamental rights, support the enlargement process and accelerate the partners’ economic convergence with the EU.

EU HRVP: Gaza – Starvation and bloodbath

Additionally, in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, there has been a surge of demolitions, settlement construction, restrictions on movement and access, as well as settler violence since 7 October. All these measures makes the life of Palestinians in the occupied territories very difficult, if not almost impossible. For months, we have been calling on Israel to seriously confront settler violence, release much-needed revenues withheld from the Palestinian Authority, and refrain from actions that may aggravate an already explosive situation. So far, without success.

MEPs and Council reach deal on cyber solidarity act and on managed security services

The “Cyber Solidarity Act”, informally agreed upon with the Belgian Presidency of the Council on Wednesday, aims to build a more resilient, collective EU response against cyber-threats. The legislative proposal seeks to bolster the European Union’s ability to detect, prepare for, and respond to cybersecurity threats and incidents. The proposal’s key objectives include strengthening EU-wide detection and situational awareness of cyber threats, enhancing preparedness and response capabilities for significant cybersecurity incidents, and fostering European technological sovereignty in cybersecurity.

Main results of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council on 5 March 2024

The Belgian presidency gave an update on one of its priority issues for its 6-month term: fighting drug trafficking and organised crime. It highlighted in particular two elements: the setting up of a network of prosecutors specialised in the fight against organised crime, and the strengthening of judicial cooperation with third countries.
