Asylum policy penalty: Judgment of the EU Court: EU Commission v Hungary

Hungary is ordered to pay a lump sum of €200 million and a penalty payment of €1 million per day of delay for failure to comply with a judgment of the EU Court of Justice. The failure, which consists in deliberately avoiding the application of a common EU policy as a whole, constitutes an “unprecedented and extremely serious infringement of EU”, according to the EU Court.

Trade in used clothes: UNECE and ECLAC want to reduce impact on environment and health

The rise of fast-fashion, marked by rapid turnover of collections, has led to a sevenfold increase in the global trade of used clothing in the last 4 decades. With more than 80% of all purchased clothing items globally (62% in the EU) being disposed of as general garbage, which is incinerated or landfilled, this represents a massive waste of resources, causing severe environmental and health impacts.

EU commemorates the victims of the global climate crisis

In 2023, the EU Parliament, the EU Council and the EU Commission signed a Joint Declaration establishing an annual Day for the Victims of the Global Climate Crisis, on 15 July each year. It is an occasion to remember victims in Europe and worldwide, as well as to raise awareness how to reduce the risk of climate change to respond to climate disasters.
