Presidents of Ukraine and Romania discussed economic cooperation and defense support for Ukraine

The Head of State that the strategic partnership between Ukraine and Romania, announced last year, is already yielding tangible results. According to him, the export of Ukrainian products through Romania has increased from 2 to over 3 million tons per month. The interlocutors discussed the possibility of further expanding the capacity of border crossing points to reach the target of 4 million tons. Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of the European Council’s decision to start negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the EU. The Head of State thanked Romania for supporting this decision and willingness to share its experience in European integration.

Russia: Vladimir Putin signs order granting citizenship to military service contractors

The new Executive Order on conferment of citizenship under simplified procedures applies to certain categories of foreigners. These include those who have concluded a contract for military service in the Russian Federation Armed Forces or in military formations during the special military operation or who are performing military service during this period; foreigners who were dismissed from military service during the special military operation on certain grounds; spouses, children, and parents of such persons.

Vladimir Putin signs Executive Order on right to apply for Russian citizenship

Under the Executive Order, simplified procedures for applying for Russian citizenship without any requirements to the duration of their stay in Russia, knowledge of the Russian language, Russian history and Russian legislation shall apply the following categories of individuals: citizens of Ukraine, stateless persons who were born and have been living in Crimea and Sevastopol prior to March 18, 2014, their children, spouses, and parents; citizens of Ukraine and stateless persons entitled to stay/live in Russia, who had permanently lived on the territory of Ukraine, their children, spouses, and parents; individuals illegally deported from the Crimean ASSR, their close relatives, adopted children, and spouses; citizens of Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, and Syria who were born in the RSFSR and previously had the status of Soviet citizens, as well as their children, spouses, and parents.

Russia: Amendments to Executive Order on nuclear power 

The Executive Order amends the annex to the Executive Order On Restructuring the Nuclear Power Generation Complex of the Russian Federation, listing nuclear materials which can only be in federal ownership. In accordance with the Executive Order, an exclusion is made for enriched uranium intended for producing nuclear fuel for NPPs, transport power plants, research reactors, or for ionising-radiation detectors, elementary particle accelerator targets, products to be subjected to radiation in in-core or sealed radiation sources.

UN: General Assembly meets over Gaza veto by US in Security Council

The UN General Assembly Emergency Special Session meets on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question. The immediate priority in Gaza must be saving civilian lives said the President of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, as Member States gathered to debate the use of the veto by the United States in the Security Council last month. Assembly Vice President Cheikh Niang of Senegal, holding the gavel in the General Assembly Hall and deputizing for President Dennis Francis, read out a statement on his behalf.

Aid relief arriving in Gaza but ‘too little, too late’, warns WHO

The WHO official insisted that the UN and its partners remained “completely ready” to deliver assistance to Gazans, who have endured a massive bombing campaign by the Israel military, in response to the Hamas-led terror attacks in southern Israel beginning 7 October that killed some 1,200 people. But hostilities and evacuation orders in Gaza’s central areas and further south in  Khan Younis have affected access to hospitals for patients and ambulances, Dr Peeperkorn explained, adding that it has also become “incredibly complex” for WHO to reach “ailing” facilities with medical supplies and fuel.

Jordan/France: Conversation between Catherine Colonna and Ayman Safadi

Bangladesh: EU HR on the parliamentary elections

The EU welcomes the agreement of the authorities to make public the upcoming report and recommendations of the EU Election Expert Mission. In the same spirit of transparency and accountability, we call upon the relevant authorities to ensure a timely and full investigation of all reported election irregularities. The EU condemns the acts of violence that occurred during the electoral period and urges everybody to refrain from violence in the post-election period. It is also key that the rule of law, judicial independence, due process and the right to peaceful assembly are respected and upheld in this period and beyond. In this regard, detention of opposition figures is highly concerning.

The EU Commission invites farmers to participate in online survey on simplification

As announced in its proposals to reduce the burden weighing on farmers’ shoulders, the Commission is launching today an online survey to gather directly the views of EU farmers. The survey is open from 7 March to 8 April, and will ask short questions, available in all EU languages, such as: How much time is spent each year on administrative tasks linked to application of aid and reporting obligations? Do they use mobile devices to provide geo-tagged photos? How do they rate the complexity of different procedures and rules applicable on farms? Did they use outside help to prepare CAP aid application in 2023? The answers provided by farmers will provide valuable feedback to understand their main sources of concern.

UK: Maritime and Coastguard Agency leads counter-pollution exercise

The 3-day activity, running from Tuesday 5 March to Thursday 7 March, will test the response to a mock scenario in which 300 tons of fuel is spilled in waters east of Portland Harbour. The practice will include testing MCA operations at sea as well as working with partner agencies to further test their plans along the shoreline.

Today (6 March) pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca has outlined plans to invest £650 million in the UK – helping boost the UK’s world leading Life Sciences sector and grow the economy. This significant investment will enhance public health protection and pandemic preparedness.   
AstraZeneca intends to invest £450 million at their manufacturing site in Speke, Liverpool for the research, development, and manufacture of vaccines – building on the site’s current role in supplying the world leading childhood vaccination programme. The new facility will be designed and built to be operationally net zero with power supplied from renewable energy sources.

Platform chemicals from CO2: Defects welcome

Is it possible to convert CO2 back to fuels or other useful chemicals? Absolutely – but not in a very targeted way just yet. Empa researcher Alessandro Senocrate is looking at defects in materials that will help us achieve this goal. This promising idea is drawing a lot of research, including at Empa, because the conversion is challenging to implement. For instance, a reaction using a copper catalyst – the most commonly studied catalyst for the conversion of carbon dioxide – yields around 15 to 20 different types of molecules, from carbon monoxide and methane to propanol and acetic acid.

Finland: Provisional agreement on proposal for regulation concerning packaging and packaging waste

On 4 March 2023, the EU Member States, European Parliament and Commission reached a provisional political agreement on a proposal for a regulation on packaging and packaging waste. Finland has taken an active part in the preparation of the regulation. The proposal that was agreed on can be evaluated in further detail only after its final content is available. The proposal is still pending formal adoption by the Member States and Parliament. The regulation will become applicable 18 months after its adoption.

Norway: Announcement of areas related to CO2 storage

The Norwegian government are facilitating the socio-economically profitable storage of CO2 on the Norwegian continental shelf. Companies that have the necessary expertise and that have specific, industrial plans that entail a need for storage on a commercial basis can apply to the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy for a licence adapted to the needs of the business. The government will conduct a predictable, efficient, and flexible process to award industrial players access to relevant storage options. Areas that are relevant for awards will be announced, among other things, to ensure competition.
