Occupied Palestinian Territory: Statement by EU HR Borrell on Israeli draft legislation against UNRWA operations

Every year over 7000 people become victims of human trafficking in the EU. The actual number is likely to be much higher as many victims remain undetected.  Trafficking in human beings is a heinous crime against the most vulnerable people in our society. This human tragedy is exploited for ruthless profit. The yearly cost of trafficking in human beings in the EU is estimated to be up to 2.7 billion EUR. Forms of exploitation have evolved in recent years, with crime increasingly taking an online dimension and diversifying its means and illicit profits.

10th EU-Egypt Association Council meeting: Joint press statement by Egypt and the EU

The Association Council took stock of the progress made on the joint Partnership Priorities adopted in June 2022 with a view to promoting joint interests. The EU and Egypt intend to pursue a cooperation that promotes multilateralism and the rules-based international order. They will continue working together to foster stability, peace and security in the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Africa. UN: Gaza fighting spreads into hospitals where there’s ‘no way in and out’

The WHO spokesperson added that only 14 hospitals are still functioning in Gaza –  seven in the north and seven in the south – where health needs are overwhelming after more than three months of heavy bombardment by Israeli Defense Forces, triggered by Hamas-led terror attacks in Israel that left some 1,200 dead and approximately 250 taken hostage. The development follows an alert on X, formerly Twitter, from WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Monday evening about reports of “continuous fighting” near hospitals in Kheir Younis, where violence prevented “newly injured people outside the hospitals from being reached and receiving care”.

UNODC: With over 460m children living in conflict, child protection systems must be strengthened

In a world where “460 million children were living in contexts of conflict in 2022”, child protection systems must be strengthened, said Ms. Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), at a high-level conference at the European Parliament.  At the Protection of Children in Armed Conflict conference in Brussels, organized by the European Parliament Intergroup on Children’s Rights and the Universities Network for Children in Armed Conflict (UNETCHAC), Ms. Waly was joined by Parliamentarians, students, and young researchers – some of whom came from areas affected by armed conflicts – in an effort to include these groups in policymaking.

The OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan is an OSCE field operation mandated to support Uzbekistan in its efforts to implement its OSCE commitments in the three dimensions of the organisation’s comprehensive concept of security: the politico-military, the economic and environmental, and the human dimension. The OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan works in close cooperation with the host state’s government and civil society. The Project Co-ordinator’s office is based in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, and has a staff of 40 international and local personnel.

Today, we have discussed, with the different authorities, the next steps to take. There is more work to be done. We need to see progress, especially – and this means, adoption of  laws – on the ‘fundamentals’ of the EU accession: That is democracy and the rule of law. It starts with the fight against money laundering, the conflict of interest, and for example the law on Courts. As you know, the Commission will report to the Council on the progress by March. And EU Leaders will then discuss on the basis of this report.

EU Council adopts new directives EU Disability Card and the EU Parking Card for persons with disabilities

The EU Council has adopted two new directives that will make it easier for persons with disabilities to travel within the EU. The directive establishing the European disability card and the European parking card for persons with disabilities will ensure equal access to special conditions or preferential treatment for persons with disabilities during short stays throughout the EU. Examples include reduced or zero entry fees, priority access, assistance, and reserved parking spaces.

EU Commission takes action to improve the quality of traineeships in the EU

The EU’s 2014 Quality Framework for Traineeships set out 21 quality principles to ensure high-quality learning and working conditions. In its 2023 evaluation of this Council Recommendation, the Commission found that it had a positive impact on the quality of traineeships in the EU. However, the Commission’s evaluation also found room for improvement and both the Conference on the Future of Europe and the European Parliament called on the Commission to improve traineeships.

EU Commission sets out actions to tackle labour and skills shortages

Today, the Commission has presented an action plan to tackle labour and skills shortages and proposes to work together with Member States and social partners to address these issues over the coming months and years. The action plan is part of the EU’s strategy to boost its competitiveness and enhance its economic and social resilience. For almost a decade, labour and skills shortages have been increasing in all Member States. These shortages are driven by demographic shifts, the demand for new skills linked to technological developments and the twin transitions, the drive to develop further our own industrial sectors, defence and security needs, and challenges related to working conditions in some sectors and locations. The Commission has identified 42 ‘shortage’ occupations, with some differences across the Member States.

Africa: Team Europe and African partners launch four TEIs to strengthen health systems and social protection

Three health Team Europe Initiatives (TEIs) were launched today during the high-level event on the European Union (EU) – African Union (AU) partnership on Global Health for equitable access, in Brussels. The TEIs will strengthen health security, support Public Health Institutes in Africa, and boost digital health. On this occasion a Team Europe Initiative on Social Protection was also launched. The Team Europe Initiative on Sustainable Health Security will strengthen prevention, preparedness and response to infectious threats and anti-microbial resistance in African countries. It brings together the European Commission, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Spain, ECDC and the Africa CDC.

ECDC issues recommendations for strengthening emergency and pandemic preparedness planning

PHSMs refer to non-pharmaceutical measures implemented in community settings to abate the spread of infectious disease. These constituted the primary public health response during the initial phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, notably before medical countermeasures including vaccines became widely available. In future pandemics PHSMs may again be relied upon to reduce disease transmission and mitigate detrimental health impacts.
