  1. On 23 March 20221, the Commission adopted a Communication proposing short and medium-term actions to support food security in the EU and globally in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These actions contribute to transparent and well-functioning global food and input markets. Moreover, on 6 April 2022 the Commission committed close to EUR 1 billion for food security in the Sahel and Lake Chad regions, where millions of people already suffer from acute food insecurity.
  2. The Commission also committed to contributing to food security in North Africa and the Middle East, which rely on imports of cereals. The EU has launched a EUR 225 million Food and Resilience Facility for the Southern Neighbourhood and mobilised EUR 20 million for Lebanon as humanitarian assistance to cope with increased food prices. More generally, the Commission explores ways to increase humanitarian assistance to countries affected by the consequences of the war.
  3. The European Commission has adopted on 23 March 2022 a decision2 allowing Member States to temporarily derogate from certain requirements related to additional greening payments in order to bring additional agricultural land into production.
