Reports of tensions in Sudan are deeply worrying and every effort should be made by all sides to de-escalate and maintain calm.

Four years after the fall of the al-Bashir regime, the aspirations of the Sudanese people remain unfulfilled. A return to civilian rule is an urgent imperative and the political process that has shown so much promise in recent months should be allowed to move forward on an inclusive basis.

The European Union remains steadfast with the Sudanese people and fully supports the facilitation process led by UNITAMS, the African Union and IGAD. We are convinced that the few outstanding issues can be resolved by dialogue. There is no more time to lose to establish a civilian-led transitional Government that could urgently address the huge political, economic, security, and humanitarian challenges the country is facing, with the support of the international community.
