On 9 December 2024, the Commission held a technical roundtable with very large online platforms (VLOPs) and search engines (VLSEs), researchers, and Digital Services Coordinators (DSCs) to discuss the delegated regulation on access to online platform data for vetted researchers.

The roundtable focused on the technical measures and best practices that could be implemented to facilitate the roll-out of the data access mechanism for vetted researchers. Researchers shared their insights on existing data access mechanisms and pointed to concrete measures to support the preparation of applications. Participants shared their insights and experiences on how to determine suitable safeguards based on the sensitivity level of the requested data. Participants also explored possibilities for strengthening the dialogue between researchers and platforms prior to the submission of applications, to streamline the process and reduce the administrative burden.

This roundtable concludes the open call for evidence to gather public feedback on the draft delegated act, which has been open from 29 October to 10 December 2024. After carefully analysing the gathered public feedback, the Commission plans to adopt the rules in the first half of 2025.

Researchers’ access to data under Article 40(4) of the DSA is one of the tools in the toolbox of transparency introduced by the DSA, which includes the DSA Transparency Database, and the DSA transparency reports, among others.
