Three Renew Europe MEPs have been elected to chair core Committees in the European Parliament. Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann MEP, elected Chair of SEDE, Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP, Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee and Barry Andrews MEP, elected Chair of the Parliament’s Committee on Development.

The successful election of Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann MEP as Chair of SEDE reflects Renew Europe’s electoral priority, defence and security, at a time of war in Europe and geopolitical change. Renew Europe expects and hopes that SEDE will become, on the initiative of Renew Europe, a fully-fledged parliamentary committee in September.

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann MEP, new Chair of SEDE, said:

“Conflicts in our neighbourhood and changing geopolitical tides mean that we need a step change in European security so that we can take our destiny into our own hands. As Chairwoman of the German Bundestag, it has become particularly clear to me that we can only find answers to the major security policy challenges facing our continent today by working together in Europe. As Chairman of the SEDE, I will therefore endeavour to find common European solutions to new and existing security challenges. The security and defence of Europe is an absolute priority for Renew Europe. I would like to thank my fellow committee members for their trust.”

Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) Committee will be chaired by Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP, after his election today.

Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP, newly elected Chair of the Parliament’s JURI Committee said:

“I thank my committee colleagues for their trust in me. The legal affairs Committee has a vital legislative competence with an important number of horizontal and institutional responsibilities and I look forward to chairing its work. The Rule of Law is a core priority of liberals and will be a priority for me personally.”

Barry Andrews MEP was elected as Chair of the Parliament’s DEVE Committee, a crucial post that will keep the spotlight on and advocating for support to developing countries.

Barry Andrews MEP, new Chair of DEVE said:

“The EU is a valued leader on development and humanitarian aid and I will do my upmost to ensure this continues and grows, at a time when populism and isolationism are increasing globally. Conflicts in our neighbourhood, for example in Gaza and Ukraine, and the need to progress our sustainable development goals show the need for resolute humanitarian and development policies. I thank my colleagues for putting their trust in me.”

Renew Europe Committee teams have also selected a lead MEP, or ‘Coordinator’ for each Committee of the Parliament, to guide the work of Renew Europe. The Coordinators will act as spokespersons in their respective fields. The full list of elected Coordinators can be found here attached.
