Brussels, 3 February 2025
The EU Commission has established a new Task Force dedicated to housing, which has kicked off its work on 1 February 2025.
The Task Force is formally attached to the Directorate-General for Energy. As President von der Leyen set out in her Political Guidelines for this mandate, the housing crisis facing millions of people, in particular families and young people needs to be urgently addressed. In support of the first-ever Commissioner for Housing, this new Task Force will develop and implement a European Affordable Housing Plan and related policy initiatives and actions that are set out in the Commissioner’s mission letter. It will strive to set out effective EU policies to address the structural drivers of the housing crisis, and in particular to unlock public and private investments for affordable and sustainable housing, and thereby also address important housing-related aspects such as homelessness.
The Task Force will coordinate policy work across the Commission by cooperating with all DGs responsible for the different priorities. It will also work closely with the European Parliament and its newly established temporary committee on the housing crisis, the Member States (including national, regional and local authorities), the European Investment Bank and other financial institutions, the Committee of the Regions, the Economic and Social Committee. It will interact in wide-ranging dialogues with all stakeholders to support Member States, cities and other relevant actors to guide technical assistance and to encourage sharing of knowledge and best practices.
