On Wednesday, the Civil Liberties Committee will discuss with Commissioner Ylva Johansson on the practical aspects of recently activated Temporary Protection Directive.

MEPs will quiz the Commissioner on the implementation of the Temporary Protection Directive, activated by the Council for the first time on 4 March 2022.

MEPs will inquire about the assistance provided by the EU and it agencies, as well as regarding administrative procedures for accessing the residence rights, housing, medical assistance, access to education and the labour market. They are likely to underscore the need to protect vulnerable persons, women and children fleeing conflict, from trafficking and exploitation.

Background

According to the UNHCR, more almost 3 million persons have left the Ukraine since 24 February, most of them heading to neighbouring countries : Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania, as well as Republic of Moldova. The European Commission put forward a proposal to activate the Temporary Protection Directive on 2 March 2022.
