Background

The EU is the largest foreign investor, as well as the largest provider of development assistance, and one of the largest traders in the Indo-Pacific region. In recent years, geopolitical competition has intensified in the Indo-Pacific, mainly due to China’s increasingly assertive behaviour. The lack of a regional security mechanism has increased the pressure on security and stability in the region and beyond.
