Strasbourg, 13 March 2024

The rapporteur for the Long Term Residence Directive recast, Damian Boeselager (Greens/EFAs, DE) together with shadow rapporteurs Lena Düpont (EPP, DE), Domènec Ruiz Devesa (S&D, ES), Abir Al-Sahlani (Renew, SE; also Rapporteur for the EMPL committee) and Konstantinos Arvanitis (The Left, EL), have made the following statement:

“The negotiations on this directive have been ongoing since December 2023, after the Council finally adopted its negotiating position to a proposal made in April 2022.

Regrettably, these negotiations came to an abrupt end this month, despite clear willingness from our team to continue in order to reach a final compromise before the European parliament elections in June. This is a huge setback for everyone that hoped Europe would finally update its labour migration laws and become more attractive to international talent, improve the mobility of foreign workers and shorten the timelines for obtaining the permanent EU status for them and their families.

This will have real consequences for European competitiveness and the capacity of EU companies to attract third country workers into our economies.”
