Budapest, 13 September 2024

The simplification of the funding system under the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy is exceptionally important for the future of European agriculture.

The Meeting of Common Agricultural Policy Directors took place between 10th and 12th of September at Várkert Bazaar in Budapest. The event focused on simplifying the Common Agricultural Policy, in line with the priorities of the Hungarian Presidency. At their informal meeting on Tuesday, EU Ministers of Agriculture agreed that changes are necessary, as it is much more difficult for farmers to respond to challenges in a complicated and strict regulatory environment. In this process, the experience and work of leaders and experts who are responsible for managing the agricultural support systems of Member States play a crucial role.

It is clear that Common Agricultural Policy strategic plans shall be truly strategic; their content shall be simplified, while their modification must be accelerated

Zsolt Feldman Hungarian State Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development

For Hungary, the Common Agricultural Policy Strategy Plan provides over 13.25 billion euros for the 2023-2027 period. Of this, 7,32 billion euros are allocated to agricultural and rural development, with 52% directed towards economic development and 36% towards achieving environmental and climate goals.  Regarding this, Mr. Feldman stated that „the contribution of the agricultural sector to the green transition should be maintained, but farmers must be involved in this process.”

„The implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy Strategy Plan is successful, as it is in line with the plans,” emphasised Christina Borchmann, Director of Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plans at European Commission DG AGRI. She added that all Member States submitted their annual performance reports within the legal deadlines, and all have been accepted. Additionally, 17 amendments on Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plans have already been approved this year.
