Brussels, 10 March 2023

Today, Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal, Frans Timmermans, is visiting several clean innovative projects and campuses in the Dutch cities of Geleen and Maastricht. This morning, during a tour at the Brightlands campus Chemelot in Geleen, he discussed the ongoing work of this community in the field of sustainability, health and digitisation as well as raw materials. Together with Governor and King’s Commissioner of Limburg, Emile Roemer, he gathered with students for a conversation about their ongoing projects.

In Maastricht, Executive Vice-President Timmermans visited the European Einstein Telescope, an advanced gravitational-wave observatory, currently in the planning stage and also part of the region’s Brightlands Campuses. The Einstein Telescope will be able to detect up to a thousand times more sources of gravitational waves than any of its predecessors. Later this afternoon, he will give a keynote speech in an energy justice event organised by Dutch Trade Union FNV and the municipality of Heerlen.
