Brussels, 17 March 2025
On Tuesday, the European Commission and the Polish Presidency will organise a high-level event to mark the launch of the European Health Data Space (EHDS).
The EHDS, which will come into force this month, is a major initiative that will change the way we access and share health data across the EU. This innovative new system will allow patients to take control of their electronic medical records, access and share their data securely and easily, including cross-border situations.
Health professionals, researchers and policymakers will also benefit from better access to data, under strict conditions, opening up new opportunities for research, innovation and improved patient outcomes. In addition, the regulation will ensure the interoperability and data security of electronic medical record systems and therefore contribute to the achievement of our cybersecurity objectives.
Olivér Várhelyi, EU Commissioner for Animal Health and Welfare, will launch the high-level event, where experts and stakeholders will come together to discuss the benefits of EHDS for patients, healthcare professionals and researchers. It will also spark discussions on key issues shaping the future of EHDS, including defining the next steps in EHDS implementation, building trust through strong privacy and security safeguards, and unlocking the potential of EHDS to drive innovation, growth and competitiveness in the EU’s health sector.
EU Commissioner Várhelyi said:
The European Health Data Space Act marks a historic milestone in our commitment to empower citizens, advance healthcare innovation, accelerate the development of AI-powered solutions and foster cross-border collaboration. With this new framework, we are paving the way for a future where data becomes a key driver of better health outcomes for all Europeans. Together with Member States, patients, healthcare providers, researchers and industry, we will work to ensure its successful implementation, and to make this vision a reality.
