The obstruction of the work of crucial state institutions in Iraq, caused by continued protests in Baghdad, is a matter of concern.
While the right to peaceful protests is essential to democracy, all laws and state institutions must operate to serve the Iraqi people. The European Union underscores that judicial institutions must be able to perform their functions without external pressure.
The European Union welcomes recent steps taken to de-escalate the situation and urges all parties to resolve any differences through political dialogue and within the constitutional framework.
Iraq needs a constitutionally mandated government to confront the many challenges it is facing. This is also essential for cooperation with the international community.
