The trilogue agreement approved by MEPs is a step forward in digitising European justice systems and improving access to justice.
On Thursday, the Committees on Legal Affairs (JURI) and Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) endorsed December’s trilogue agreement on reforms to e-CODEX, a system designed to allow for the cross-border electronic transmission of data in the field of judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters. The Committees approved the outcome of the negotiations with 81 votes in favour, none against and 1 abstention.
By reforming the system’s financing and management, negotiators from the European Parliament and Council aim to make cross-border judicial communication more efficient and courts more accessible, while increasing mutual trust between EU judicial authorities and citizen’s trust in the Union.
A key part of the reform is handing over the management of e-CODEX to EU’s Agency for Large-Scale IT Systems (eu-LISA), based in Tallinn (Estonia), by the end of 2023.
