Answer to a written question – Will the Commission suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement?

The EU is gravely concerned about the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The EU joins calls for immediate pauses in hostilities and the establishment of humanitarian corridors, including through increased capacity at border crossings and through a dedicated maritime route, so that humanitarian aid can safely reach the population of Gaza. It welcomed the recent pause in hostilities and the release of hostages.
The EU underlines the importance of ensuring the protection of all civilians at all times in line with international humanitarian law. It deplores all loss of civilian life.
In addition, the EU strongly emphasises Israel’s right to defend itself in line with international law and international humanitarian law. The EU continues to pass these messages in its statements1 as well as bilaterally in its contacts with the Israeli authorities.
The Foreign Affairs Council had an orientation debate on 18 March 2024 regarding the question of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which is based on shared values, including the respect for human rights. The Council agreed to continue following this question closely and to invite the Foreign Minister of Israel for a discussion on this matter.
