Answer given by Ms Gabriel on behalf of the European Commission

(3.5.2022)

Under Horizon 2020 /1, the Commission identified a non-exhaustive list of projects linked to biological research and involving Ukrainian legal entities. The majority of research-based projects /2 are in the health area and focus on e.g. benzene alternatives in new medicines, understanding the pathophysiology of infectious diseases, epidemiological surveillance, healthy ageing and strategies for diagnostic, therapeutic or prosthetic purposes in fields ranging from cancer to neurological diseases.

In addition, there are two projects analysing mycotoxin contamination in sustainable agriculture and two projects investigating the Black Sea ecosystem. Information about all Horizon projects is publicly available on the dedicated dashboard /3.

In accordance with the relevant legislation /4, all projects funded under Horizon 2020 have undergone the ethics review carried out by the independent experts. The ethics review procedure focusses on the compliance with ethical rules and standards, relevant European legislation, international conventions and declarations, national authorizations and ethics approvals, proportionality of the research methods and the applicants’ awareness of the ethical aspects and social impact of their planned research.

1 The EU Framework Programme for Research & Innovation (2014-2020), where Ukraine participated based on the dedicated Association Agreement signed in March 2015.

2 Horizon 2020 projects with links to biological research but based on coordination, networking, twinning or research infrastructure are considered outside the scope of the questions.
