The Council has today adopted a series of decisions extending the mandates of three EU Special Representatives (EUSRs):
- Sven Koopmans had his mandate as EUSR for the Middle East Peace Process extended for two years, until 28 February 2025. Mr Koopmans was appointed on 1 May 2021.
- Terhi Hakala had her mandate as EUSR for Central Asia extended for two years, until 28 February 2025. Ms Hakala was appointed on 1 July 2021.
- Eamon Gilmore had his mandate as EUSR for Human Rights extended for one year, until 29 February 2024. He was first appointed on 1 March 2019.
Background
The EU Special Representatives are proposed by the High Representative to promote the EU’s policies and interests in specific regions and countries, and provide the EU with an active political presence in those areas.
Currently, nine EUSRs support the work of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell. These include the three special representatives mentioned above, as well as the EUSRs in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, and for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and other Western Balkans regional issues, as well as for the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, and for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia.
