This week, EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson will visit Reykjavík to strengthen energy relations with Iceland. Under the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement, the country’s energy policy and legislation are closely aligned with those of the EU. The EU and Iceland share the goal of pursuing a green economy and achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Over the next two days, the Commissioner will meet with national decision-makers, including Icelandic President Halla Tómasdóttir, Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson, and Minister for the Environment, Energy and Climate Gudlaugur Thór Thórdarson.
Tomorrow, Commissioner Simson will attend the Arctic Circle Assembly, where she will deliver a keynote speech, and address a session on the Arctic and EU energy security. In the margins of the Assembly, she will also hold a bilateral meeting with Liu Zhenmin, China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change.
On Friday, the Commissioner will visit two sites highlighting Iceland’s efforts to reduce emissions: the Hellisheiðarvirkjun geothermal power plant and the Carbfix carbon capture plant.
