Brussels, 24 March 2023

On Monday 27 March, Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, will attend in Stockholm the 12th meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol. The meeting is an important opportunity to exchange on the challenges posed by organised crime and the importance to fight child sexual abuse.

The Commissioner will give a keynote speech in the morning session, co-chaired by the Head of the Parliamentary Group delegation of the Swedish Riksdag, Adam Marttinen and the Chair of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament, Juan Fernando López Aguilar.

In the afternoon, the Swedish Minister for Justice, Gunnar Strömmer, will present progress on the priorities set by the Swedish Presidency in the area of internal security. Participants will exchange on Europol’s operational support to Member States. The EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator, Diane Schmitt, will give a keynote speech, alongside Europol and Dutch police representatives, on the fight against trafficking in human beings.

The Commission is committed to tackling serious and organised crime as outlined in the EU Security Union Strategy, the EU Strategy to tackle organised crime and the EU Strategy for a more effective fight against child sexual abuse. Europol’s new reinforced mandate and its Operational Task Forces are key in identifying and disrupting high-risk criminal networks and in supporting Member States’ investigations of child sexual abuse.

The Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol provides a framework for national parliaments and the European Parliament to politically monitor Europol’s activities in fulfilling its mission. More information is available here.
