The withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the EU has consequences for EU students studying in UK universities:
- If the student is an Irish national, no change will occur.
- For EU students who have arrived in the UK before 31 December 2020, their situation will not change as long as they register for the EU Settlement Scheme.
- For EU students having arrived in the UK after 1 January 2021 and starting their course before 31 July 2021, their immigration status will change but not their ‘home fee’ status.
If the course will begin after 1 August 2021, the UK university is free to set its own fees for EU students.
The primary responsibility for academic recognition lies with the national authorities and their universities. The obligations of the UK and Member States under the Lisbon Recognition Convention /1 apply, irrespective of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. This Convention provides for the recognition of qualifications regarding higher education.
