Brussels, 20 June 2024

Tomorrow, the Innovation Centre for Industrial Transformation and Emissions (INCITE) starts its operations in Seville, Spain. Led by the Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), this new facility aims to provide independent and transparent information on the environmental performance of innovative techniques for industrial use. INCITE will be a key tool in the implementation of the revised Industrial Emissions Directive.

INCITE will assess the maturity of breakthrough technologies linked to decarbonisation, resource efficiency, circular economy and depollution, looking at both environmental and economic aspects. INCITE’s experts will assess whether these technologies are cost-effective, energy and resource efficient, ready for use at industrial scale, and whether they provide significant overall environmental benefits.

Virginijus Sinkevičius, Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, said:

“INCITE is a pioneering initiative that will accelerate the uptake of cutting-edge technologies and drive a greener, more competitive industry in the EU. As a major tool to deliver our European Green Deal and the new Industrial Emissions Directive, INCITE will unlock the full potential of innovation, reduce investment risks, and promote sustainable growth.”

Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth said:

“INCITE will create a platform where industry, stakeholders and investors can access valuable scientific evidence on industrial innovations and share ideas. This will build bridges and promote economic growth while accelerating the green transition in Europe. This marks a new step to promoting environmental sustainability and industrial transformation in Europe.”

The technical information provided by INCITE will help investment decisions in innovative technologies needed to advance Europe’s transition towards a cleaner, climate-neutral, more circular and competitive economy by 2050.

INCITE will cover all sectors under the Industrial Emissions Directive, with an initial focus on energy-intensive industries such as steel, cement and chemicals. INCITE’s technical assessments and findings will be accessible to industry, finance institutions, technology providers, permitting authorities and research and technology organisations. The inauguration will be livestreamed online. More information will be available here.
