Brussels, 13 July 2023

€226 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the programming period 2014-2020 will finance the construction of a new technical and hospitalisation block for the general hospital and the maternity and children’s units of University Hospital ‘October 12′, in the south of Madrid in Spain, following the approval by the Commission.

Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, said:

Thanks to cohesion funds the healthcare services for more than 1 million people in Madrid and its surrounding low-income districts of Villaverde, Usera and Carabanchel will improve and become more resilient to ensure a safe and healthier future for citizens.

The new building will house a technical block for emergencies, surgery, and diagnostic imaging; hospitalisation wards with conventional and intensive care unit (ICU) beds; and a maternity wing with emergency and ambulatory areas for paediatrics and obstetrics and the hospitalisation wards. The new building will have 741 rooms that could accommodate up to 1,315 beds. Together with 114 ICU beds, the total capacity of the hospital will be 1,429 beds. The new equipment and services will use advance digital technologies and ensure availability of versatile spaces to respond to unforeseen care needs, for example with the deployment of an elasticity plan, which would make it possible to respond quickly to the new care requirements, reorganizing the spaces, material and human resources.

The transition to the new building will be an opportunity to introduce organisational changes in the hospital. The new infrastructure and equipment, modern technologies to be applied and a new organisation for the management and delivery of the services, will allow the re-organisation of the care process and efficiency gains. It will also help healthcare staff to develop their competences. The new infrastructure will be operational at the end of 2023.
