Brussels, 2 December 2022
The Commission has adopted the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) programmes for Portugal and Slovenia.
The total amount of the allocated funds for Portugal, which cover this six-year period, is €539.9 million, of which the EU contribution accounts for €392.6 million. The total amount of the allocated funds for Slovenia is €34 million over the next six years, of which the EU contribution accounts for €24 million.
The programmes’ allocations will be mostly dedicated to sustainable fisheries, sustainable aquaculture and processing as well as to sustainable blue economy in coastal regions and the strengthening of the international ocean governance.
Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, said:
“I am pleased to announce the adoption of the EMFAF Programmes for Portugal and Slovenia, which recognise the sea as a strategic asset with potential for sustainable growth opportunities in various areas, such as research and innovation, employment and social cohesion. The programmes will also promote a low-carbon sector and a stronger blue economy.”
The EMFAF Programme in Portugal will be largely dedicated to sustainable fisheries and the compensation of additional costs in the outermost regions – Azores and Madeira. A substantial part of it will also be invested in sustainable aquaculture and in processing and marketing.
In Slovenia, about 40% of the programme will be dedicated to the sustainable blue economy. It will boost the green and digital transition, strengthen sustainable sea and ocean management in the Adriatic, as well as invest in sustainable aquaculture.
