The Co-Chairmen of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group in the European Parliament, Raffaele Fitto and Prof Ryszard Legutko, have condemned Russia’s decision to bar European Parliament President David Sassoli.

Russia’s decision to block President Sassoli, along with seven other individuals, from entering Russian territory is understood to have come as a response to recent EU sanctions placed on two Russian nationals accused of human rights abuses in Russia’s Chechnya region.

In support of President Sassoli, Co-Chairman Legutko said:

“The actions against President Sassoli are a sharp reminder of the need for tangible measures to be taken against the Russian aggressor. The ECR Group stands in full solidarity with our colleague in the Parliament.”

Raffaele Fitto added:

“On behalf of the ECR Group, I extend my deepest sympathies to President Sassoli. Mr Putin continues to sink to new lows. Threats and acts of arrogance will not make us abandon our commitment to human rights.”
