The second EU-ASEAN Workshop on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) took place virtually from 27-28 April, with speakers and participants from the European Union (EU) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as ITS experts from both regions, present.

The workshop was an opportunity for both sides to exchange knowledge and experiences on ITS, and to discuss challenges and opportunities for ITS development in ASEAN countries.

During the meeting, the participants heard about the findings and recommendations of the ‘ITS Study on the Recommendations for the Development of National ITS Master Plan’, commissioned under the EU-ASEAN Engagement on Road Transport. The study assesses ITS developments in ASEAN Member States, including regional and national-level initiatives, to provide recommendations on the development of ITS National Masterplans, and to ensure the interoperability of ITS implementation within the ASEAN region.

The study’s recommendations, which showcase best practices, cooperation platforms, funding mechanisms, the monitoring of ITS Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and progress reporting tools, were discussed by the experts in interactive sessions. The feedback collected will be used to finalise the study.

This workshop was supported by the Enhanced Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (E-READI), a development cooperation instrument that facilitates cooperation between the EU and ASEAN in priority policy areas of joint interest.
