Freedoms of thought, expression, assembly and association are protected under Articles 10, 11 and 12 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the Commission is committed to ensuring their respect within the remit of its competences.

Freedoms of thought, expression, assembly and association are protected under Articles 10, 11 and 12 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the Commission is committed to ensuring their respect within the remit of its competences.
However, according to Article 51, the provisions of the Charter are addressed to Member States only when they are implementing EU law. On the basis of the information provided, the episode referred to by the Honourable Member does not appear to relate to the implementation of EU law. It is thus for national authorities to ensure that their obligations regarding fundamental rights – as resulting from international agreements and from their internal legislation – are respected.
