Brussels, 2 February 2023

The European External Action Service (EEAS) under the patronage of High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell is bringing together top political representatives and experts from around the globe to discuss the threats of foreign information manipulation and interference and ways how to tackle them.

The high-profile conference on Tuesday 7 February in Brussels will be opened by a keynote speech by High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell. Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová will also participate, together with representatives from the Swedish EU Presidency, leading experts from EU institutions, Member States, international partners, such as NATO and the United Nations, civil society organisations, academia, and journalists from across the world.

Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, and Russia’s strategic and coordinated use of foreign interference and information manipulation, has underlined the importance of enhancing responses to these threats and the need for the international community to work together in tackling them. The scope of the challenge is magnified by the fact that it is not only Russia but also other actors using disinformation and information manipulation to sow divisions in our societies and undermine our democracies. Against this background, the conference will provide an opportunity to present latest trends in the field, and discuss the EU’s and its partners’ responses to these threats.

The conference ‘Beyond disinformation: EU responses to the threat of foreign information manipulation’ will be live-streamed in full. You can find more information here.

A background briefing for interested media on foreign interference and disinformation will take place on Monday 6 February at 09:30 in the EEAS.
