The European Commission has today added ‘Araban Sarımsağı‘, a garlic with white bulb skin, white cloves skin colour and cream-yellow gum colour, to the register of Protected Designations of Origin (PDO). The bulb of ‘Araban Sarımsağı’, which is an early growing garlic due to the climate and growing conditions, is oval in cross section and elliptical in longitudinal section. There are strips on the bulb skin and clove.

‘Araban Sarımsağı’ is a garlic variety belonging to the early harvested Allium Sativum L. species, which grows only in the Araban Plain. The geographical area covers all the villages and towns belonging to the Araban district in Gaziantep province in Southeastern Anatolia region. The climate and soil structure of the region are effective in the formation of unique features such as taste and aroma, together with the type of product.

This new denomination will be added to the list of 1,688 agricultural products already protected. The list of all protected geographical indications can be found in the eAmbrosia database. More information is available online at Quality Schemes and on our GIView portal.
