Russian aggression against Ukraine
During the special meeting of the European Council on 24 February, EU leaders strongly condemned Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and agreed further restrictive measures that will have massive and severe consequences for Russia. These measures cover:
- the financial sector
- the energy and transport sectors
- dual-use goods
- export control and export financing
- visa policy
- additional sanctions against Russian individuals
- new listing criteria
EU foreign affairs ministers will meet in Brussels today to proceed with the adoption of these restrictive measures.
Background
On 24 February 2022, President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a military operation in Ukraine. On the same day, EU leaders strongly condemned Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military actions against Ukraine, which grossly violate international law and undermine European and global security and stability.
They called on Russia to immediately cease the hostilities, withdraw its military forces from Ukraine and fully respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence.
The EU stands firmly by Ukraine and its people in this unparalleled crisis and will provide further political, financial and humanitarian assistance.
