Brussels, 16 January 2024

Today, the Commission launched the 2024 call for the Circulation of European Literary Works under the Creative Europe Programme. Backed by a budget of €5 million, this initiative aims to facilitate the translation, publication, distribution, and promotion of various forms of European works of fiction, including novels, poetry, and comics, through approximately 40 projects.

Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said:

“In the rich tapestry of our European heritage, each language and genre of literature adds a unique texture and colour. With €5 million in this initiative supporting literary translations and book promotion, we open doors to diverse worlds, enabling novels, poetry, and even comics to reach new audiences. This is how we write a stronger, more vibrant European story, binding us in shared understanding and appreciation.”

In 2024, the call will continue to support Ukraine in the realm of books by providing publications to refugees and displaced individuals in the Ukrainian language.

Eligible entities, whether applying individually or as part of a consortium, are invited to develop comprehensive editorial and promotional strategies for projects involving at least five eligible works of fiction translated to and from eligible languages.

The size of supported projects varies from small-scale projects (up to 10 books, €100 000), to medium-scale (up to 20 books, €200 000), and large-scale projects (at least 21 books, €300 000). Projects must adhere to general eligibility conditions and encompass a minimum of five translations. The deadline for applications is 16 April 2024. For detailed information and application procedures, visit the call page on the Funding and Tenders Portal of the EU.
