UN : Over 350,000 children in developing world missing out on cancer treatment

Treatment remains out of reach for hundreds of thousands of children diagnosed with cancer in low and middle-income countries, severely limiting their chances of survival, the UN health agency said on Wednesday. Only a quarter of low-income countries cover childhood cancer medicines in through public benefits, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the UN World Health Organization (WHO) said at his weekly press briefing in Geneva.

Wild birds heavily affected by avian influenza

In Finland, exceptionally large numbers of deaths have been recorded this summer among wild birds as a result of the A(H5) virus infection. Avian influenza viruses are poorly transmitted from animals to humans or from person to person. In 2023, avian influenza has circulated extensively among wild birds throughout Europe. Black-headed gulls especially have been heavily affected by the virus.

Preliminary outbreak assessment: Lumpy skin disease in Libya

The first outbreak started on 8 May 2023 in Swanee, Al Jifarah and was confirmed on 8 June 2023 (WOAH, 2023). The second outbreak started in Janzour, Al Jifarah on 20 May 2023, approximately 11km from the first outbreak. The third outbreak occurred in Alzaytua, Tripoli, approximately 11km from Swanee, and started on 1 June 2023 (ProMed, 2023).

France: Foreign minister Colonna visits  Germany and Alsace

Mme Colonna and her counterpart will visit the water treatment and storage plant in Steinfeld, Rhineland-Palatinate. The plant, designed to produce drinking water for the southern Palatinate and North Alsace areas, is part of the Franco-German PAWENA (Palatinat Alsace Wasser Eau Nature) project, paid for with European funding. The facility illustrates bilateral cooperation on the environment.

Health: EU steps up action to prevent shortages of antibiotics for next winter

The European Commission, the Heads of Medicines Agencies (HMA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) are today issuing recommendations for actions to avoid shortages of key antibiotics used to treat respiratory infections for European patients in the next winter season. These recommendations, which have been developed through the Executive Steering Group on Shortages and Safety of Medicinal Products (MSSG), complement the process to develop an EU list of critical medicines.
