UN Security Council: UK on Russia’s latest Black Sea Grain Initiative demands 

Russian missile attacks on Odessa, Chornomorsk and Mykolaiv destroyed over 60,000 tons of grain. That is enough to feed 270,000 people for a year or to double WFP [World Food Programme] shipments under the BSGI to both Sudan and Somalia. Russia has destroyed dock equipment, making it harder to load grain on ships. Now, Russia has gone further, burning food at the dockside, and making threats to murder civilian sailors.

Finland sends material assistance to ensure water supply in Ukraine

During the summer, Finland has sent water purification materials, water containers, pumps and intensive chlorination units to Ukraine to strengthen the country’s water supply. In addition, new shipments of water production materials and wastewater purification equipment are under preparation. Finland will continue to support Ukraine.

The Council today decided to prolong by six months, until 31 January 2024, the restrictive measures targeting specific sectors of the economy of the Russian Federation. These sanctions, first introduced in 2014 in response to Russia’s actions destabilising the situation in Ukraine, were significantly expanded since February 2022, in response to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine.

France will continue to provide food aid to the countries most vulnerable to food insecurity as a result of the Russian aggression. Norway extends agreement on medical evacuation from Ukraine

Since August 2022, Norway has been providing regular weekly flights to evacuate Ukrainian patients to countries across Europe. The European Commission has described the transport as a cornerstone of the evacuation effort. In response to the request of the EU, the Norwegian Government has decided to extend the medical evacuation operation until February 2024. The agreement may be further extended if necessary.
