The European Defence Agency (EDA) joined the large-scale military exercise ‘Robotic Experimentation Maritime Unmanned Systems (REPMUS)’ for the first time as a co-organiser, running several initiatives.

In a meeting chaired by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Allies made progress on preparations for the Washington Summit in July and agreed that providing support to Ukraine should remain a top priority.
At the end of May, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson hosted a Nordic-Ukrainian Summit in Stockholm, in which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took part. During the Summit a declaration was adopted: Joint statement of the Nordic-Ukrainian Summit in Stockholm.
The EU and Norway signed a Security and Defence Partnership. The declaration was signed by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, on behalf of the European Union and by the Norwegian Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence.
The Ukrainian Minister of Defence, Rustem Umerov, briefly intervened via VTC to report on the situation on the ground, and NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, physically joined EU Defence Ministers to hold an informal discussion on the interplay between EU and NATO military support.

On 16 May, the NATO Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session took place at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The 32 Allied Chiefs of Defence focused on the executability of the Alliance’s new defence plans, NATO’s warfighting transformation and NATO’s continued support to Ukraine.
The selected projects will support technological excellence across a wide range of defence capabilities in critical areas, including cyber defence, ground, air and naval combat, protection of space-based assets or Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) defence.
The EU-Ukraine Defence Industries Forum is a first, concrete step in the implementation of the European Defence Industrial Strategy (EDIS), launched in March 2024. The Forum opens the way to identify concrete cooperation initiatives, arrangements and flagship projects between the EU and Ukraine defence industries.

NATO Allies are deeply concerned about recent malign activities on Allied territory, including those resulting in the investigation and charging of multiple individuals in connection with hostile state activity affecting Czechia, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and the United Kingdom.
Over 350 representatives from the EU institutions, governments, European and Ukrainian defence industries, industry associations, key partner countries and organisations will gather to strengthen defence industrial cooperation between the EU and Ukraine.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin on Friday (26 April 2024), thanking him for Germany’s leading role in NATO and its support to Ukraine. “Germany makes major contributions to our shared security,” said Mr Stoltenberg.
“Ukrainians have reported 7,000 guided bombs in four months 2024, which is about 60 guided bombs a day. There is the constant shelling in the east of Ukraine. It is part of Putin’s strategy. On the other hand, it is clear that Ukraine lacks weapons for self-defense and to reject the Russian aggression” – EU HR Josep Borrell.
The Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg discussed the Russian aggression against Ukraine in a joint session gathering both EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs and EU Ministers of Defence. They discussed the situation in the Middle East, with particular attention to the ever-worsening situation in the Gaza strip and the risk of escalation in the wider region.
Mr Stoltenberg said that Allies had agreed to provide further military support, including more air defences: “NATO has mapped out existing capabilities across the Alliance and there are systems that could be made available to Ukraine.”
