Romania joins the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention

Today, Romania’s Ambassador in charge of OECD affairs at the Embassy of Romania in France, Adrian Cosmin Vieriţa, deposited Romania’s instrument of accession to the Convention at OECD Headquarters in Paris. Under the terms of the Convention, the Convention will enter into force for Romania in 60 days from today – that is on 22 September 2023.

RRF: EU Commission receives third payment request from Croatia for €700m in grants

Croatia’s third payment request for €700 million (net of pre-financing) relates to 32 milestones and 13 targets. They cover investments in areas such as flood protection, recycling of municipal waste, digitalisation of administrative, medical and judicial services, energy renovation of buildings, sustainable, green and digital tourism, the purchase of seismic equipment and the construction of the cable ferry Križnica.

State aid: EU Commission approves €850m French measure to support ArcelorMittal decarbonise its steel production

The European Commission has approved, under EU State aid rules, a €850 million French measure to support ArcelorMittal France in partially decarbonising its steel production processes. The measure will contribute to the achievement of the EU Hydrogen Strategy, the European Green Deal and the Green Deal Industrial Plan targets, while helping to end dependence on Russian fossil fuels and fast forward the green transition in line with the REPowerEU Plan.

EPPO: EU Council appoints two European prosecutors

These appointments take place in the context of the partial renewal of the EPPO College. As part of the transitional rules for the first term of office following the creation of the EPPO the European prosecutors from one third of the member states, determined by drawing lots, were to hold a three year non-renewable mandate in order to stagger the renewal of the EPPO College.

Human rights violations: EU lists 18 individuals and five entities

The EU also imposed restrictive measures against twelve other individuals and five entities responsible for serious human rights violations in Russia. The measures target those who have misused facial recognition technology for massive arbitrary arrests in Russia as well as the politically motivated rulings against the opposition politicians, democracy activists and outspoken Kremlin critics Alexei Navalny and Vladimir Kara-Murza.

EPF: EU Council adopts an assistance measure in support of the 31st Congolese Rapid Reaction Brigade

The Council today adopted an assistance measure, worth €20 million, under the European Peace Facility to support the 31st Rapid Reaction Brigade of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC). War in Ukraine: EU renews sanctions over Russia’s aggression

The Council today decided to prolong by six months, until 31 January 2024, the restrictive measures targeting specific sectors of the economy of the Russian Federation. These sanctions, first introduced in 2014 in response to Russia’s actions destabilising the situation in Ukraine, were significantly expanded since February 2022, in response to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine.

Finland intensifies measures to combat avian influenza at fur farms

Highly pathogenic avian influenza was diagnosed in fur animals in Finland in July 2023. The addition of highly pathogenic avian influenza in fur animals to the category of other animal disease to be combated gives the animal health authorities the right to take the necessary measures to eradicate the infection and prevent the spread of the disease.

Norway: Government’s position to the CRMA and NZIA

On 16 March, the European Commission presented a proposal for a regulation on the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) and the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA), following up the Green Deal Industrial Plan for a Net-Zero Age from February 2023. Industry Committee attempt to sabotage new EU packaging law 

Mirroring the requests of the laggards in the packaging industry, the report decimated ambitions on reuse and waste prevention, deleting all reuse targets for the HORECA sector as well as all 2040 reuse targets across sectors. Cyber resilience act: Coreper agree common position on security requirements for digital products

The draft regulation introduces mandatory cybersecurity requirements for the design, development, production and making available on the market of hardware and software products to avoid overlapping requirements stemming from different pieces of legislation in EU member states. The proposed regulation will apply to all products that are connected either directly or indirectly to another device or network. MEPs want more power for citizens and the EU Parliament to strengthen democracy

Strengthening the role of Parliament is essential for liberal democracy. An “EU Statute of Citizenship” shall solidify EU values and better protect citizens. Netherlands: Senate approves UAE treaties against organised crime

Dutch Senate approved two bilateral treaties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) today to address cross-border organised crime. The agreements include a treaty on providing mutual legal assistance and a treaty on extradition. They will enter into force after publication in the Official Gazette. The bilateral treaties form a component of Justice and Security Minister Yeşilgöz-Zegerius’ broader agenda for increased international cooperation in tackling organised subversive crime.

Europol: End of the road for 6 suspects smuggling migrants in rental cars

A total of 6 suspects have been arrested, and searches conducted at 12 houses and 6 hostels, following action involving 110 officers from the Judiciary Police (Polícia Judiciária) and 12 officers from the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras).
