Brussels, 21 July 2023

In line with the communication issued today by the EU Election Observation Mission (EOM), the EU expresses its utmost concern overthe actions initiated by the Special Prosecution Office against Impunity (FECI) resulting in arrest warrants against the Deputy Director of the Citizen Registry and a member of political party Semilla, as well as a raid carried out in the offices of the TSE.

The EU, as a long-standing partner of Guatemala, remains fully committed to support democracy in the country. Attempts to overturn the outcome of the elections as certified by the country’s highest electoral authorities or undermine a democratic election would inevitably have an impact on Guatemala’s international relations, including with the EU.
