JULY 19, 2021 12:00 PM

On Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 July, respectively, the ministers responsible for environment and climate change will meet at Brdo pri Kranju to exchange views on a very important legislative package, Fit for 55, with the main objective of 55-percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The informal meeting will be chaired by Andrej Vizjak, Slovenian Minister of the Environment and Spatial Planning, who aims to ensure a coherent and comprehensive consideration of specific dossiers by all relevant working parties and Council configurations.

Leading the discussion on the Fit for 55 package will be one of the main priorities for the Slovenia, as will the challenging negotiations at the COP26 in Glasgow, where we will endeavour to ensure that the EU delivers a strong message to the international community. This package includes: the update of the EU emissions trading system, the update of regulations on land use, land use changes and forestry, the reinforcement of energy efficiency and renewable resources, and the improvement of CO2 standards for road vehicles.

As a country with a rich natural world and the largest share of Natura 2000 areas in the EU, Slovenia will do its best to keep biodiversity as a priority value. With the support of the Trio partners, Portugal and Germany, Slovenia is committed to continuing preparations to draft an ambitious global framework for biodiversity after 2020, which is expected to be adopted at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, where the ministers will exchange views on new objectives. In accordance with our vision of living in harmony with nature, we will strive for the regeneration, resilience and appropriate protection of ecosystems across the world by 2050.
